Mermaid

Despite the rain I comb the beach

I search for the mermaid that is willing to teach
A mermaid to complete my one and only wish
I comb this sandy beach just for the kiss

A mermaid to dance with me
The mermaid to help me be
I wait by the sea
I stand amongst the waves to feel free

Under blue in search of you
In the sea of blue with tides anew
I will return tomorrow and every other day
If in my search I do not find you today

Yiorgos' Bio

Yiorgos’ delicately rendered graphite drawings reflect the sublime stoicism of Greek architecture. A Greek American, Yiorgos grew up hearing stories about his family’s years in Greece and their struggles during World War II. He became fascinated with his heritage, traveling to Santorini, Mykonos, The Cyclades and other Greek locales and observing them carefully. Based on photographs he has taken, Yiorgos’ black and white drawings are triumphant as they depict empty streets, white-washed walls, and uninterrupted expanses of sky or sea. Despite the absence of figures or other direct signs of daily life, the drawings reverberate with the liveliness of Greek history. The colorless quietude in Yiorgos’ scenes is open-ended, inviting viewers to imagine the vibrant colors and activity that shaped them. The extreme detail with which Yiorgos draws captures the nuances of Mediterranean landscape while also imbuing it with a nostalgic splendor. Born in Asbury Park, Yiorgos lives and works in Long Branch, New Jersey.
